View Our Latest Exhibit Celebrate American Writing American writing is distinctive, diverse, and comes in many forms from across the nation. As the only museum devoted to American writers and their works, AWM connects visitors with their favorite authors and writings from more than five centuries, while inspiring the discovery of new works of every type – poetry, lyrics, speeches, drama, fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and more. Our exhibits, both in-person and online, are all meant to engage visitors in a celebration of the significance and power of writing. My America: Immigrant & Refugee Writers Today Virtual Exhibits Packed to the brim with information, video content, activities and more, get the informative and interactive experience online. Plus, virtual exhibits include education resources for teachers, students, and parents to download. Virtual field trips, talks with authors and other online curriculum are also available. Pauli Murray: Survival With Dignity Get to know the life and work of Pauli Murray: a poet, activist, lawyer, priest, and more. Ray Bradbury: Inextinguishable Explore Bradbury’s writing and other more surprising influences on our history and daily lives. My America: Immigrant & Refugee Writers Today Explore the influence of modern immigrant and refugee writing in America on our culture, history, and daily lives. Frederick Douglass: Agitator Explore the later life of writer and orator Frederick Douglass in this original exhibit. American Voices Explore the evolution and flourishing of American writing. This rich literary heritage reflects America in all of its complexity: its energy, hope, conflict, disillusionment, and creativity. Tools of the Trade Learn more about the history of writing practice in the exhibit Tools of the Trade, which examines the tools that have made writing possible through the years. Hisaye Yamamoto: An American Story Discover the personal story of a powerful, but perhaps underappreciated writer who defined a generation of Japanese Americans as she also sought to expose injustices and give voice to the voiceless. Current Temporary Exhibits The has two galleries that house rotating exhibits on a wide array of topics. The Meijer Gallery and Roberta Rubin Writers Room are where living writers are most thoroughly incorporated into exhibit content. Many temporary exhibits also have virtual components, so explore them here before or after your visit. Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writers on Justice Explore racial injustice in America through the work of Black American writers from the end of the Civil War through the Civil Rights Movement. Zelinsky and a cozy reading area filled with books for families with young children. A Nation of Writers, John and Cathie Estey The Nation of Writers gallery celebrates writing in the United States with an interactive timeline, a surprise bookshelf which engages all 5 senses, an amazing Word Waterfall, and more! Saul Zaentz Charitable Foundation Mind of a Writer Gallery This gallery offers insights into how writers think: the daily discipline and habits necessary to get the work done, the deep understanding of language to make the writing sing. Wintrust Chicago Gallery Chicago poets, novelists, journalists, and other writers have found inspiration in everyday people, telling their stories and transforming the way they talk into art. We honor our home city in this gallery. The S. Leigh Pierson and Douglas R. Conant Readers Hall In addition to being the museum’s primary event space, Readers Hall also offers interpretive exhibits celebrating the critical role of the reader in American literature, both now and in the past. The Stead Family Foundation Writers Hall Visitors are welcomed to the Museum in Writers Hall, which is where the welcome desk and gift shop can also be found.
